How Does the Toyota Pre-Collision System Work?

When you secure the keys to a new Toyota at Landers McLarty Toyota, you gain a confidence-inspiring support system in the Toyota Safety Sense™ (TSS) suite. Numerous advanced driver-assist features are part of Toyota Safety Sense™, tracking movement as you drive through Huntsville, AL and sending alerts or directly intervening as needed to prevent collisions. One such feature is the Toyota Pre-Collision System. How does the Toyota Pre-Collision System work? Landers McLarty Toyota provides a detailed explanation, below.

Toyota Pre-Collision System: How it Works

The Toyota Pre-Collision System utilizes a front-facing camera and a laser to track objects in your car’s trajectory. If a collision seems imminent or the system determines you aren’t responding quickly enough, it will either alert you that you need to brake or automatically bring your car to a full emergency stop. Here’s a closer look at how these actions are actually carried out:

  • As you know, the system features a front-facing camera and an undetectable laser.
  • Together, the camera and laser measure the distance between your car and the obstacle that has been detected in front of you.
  • The system assesses the speed at which you’re approaching the obstacle to determine whether a collision is likely to occur.
  • If a collision seems imminent, an audiovisual alert is enacted to make you aware of the risk. If this happens, you’re meant to hit the brakes as swiftly as possible.
  • If after alerting you of the danger your vehicle is not slowing or stopping, the Pre-Collision System takes over to apply the brakes automatically.

There’s a lot happening at any given moment on Hazel Green, AL roads, and even the most careful drivers can get distracted. The Pre-Collision System is designed to help you stay safe and avoid collisions, but it is not a replacement for fully attentive driving.

Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection

Depending on the year, model, and trim of the Toyota vehicle you drive, you may get one of several versions of the Toyota Pre-Collision System. The most common version on Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0 (TSS 2.0) and Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.5+ (TSS 2.5+) suites is the Toyota Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection.

This version of the feature introduces a third component: a grille-mounted millimeter-wave radar that scans your path for smaller obstacles that the standard system might not detect. Pedestrian Detection assesses the shape, size, and motion of the obstacle to determine if it’s a person, so it can apply the brakes appropriately.
